Last year Mrs. Bushman was awarded a seismograph from APS and the Phoenix Suns. While the NE corner of the Colorado Plateau has been quiet recently, Mrs. Bushman and the Earth & Space Science class had the question, "Have there been an increase of frequency in earthquakes in the area?" The class collected 1197 points of data to determine the answer to this question. Using the USGS website, they looked at all earthquakes 1.5 and greater and then collected data from 1/1/1930 until today. They first graphed out all the data and realized that only graphing the earthquakes does not give a representation of frequency. They then went back and added data of when earthquakes did not occur - after all no data is data. They then found that there has been a great increase in earthquakes. The years 2003 & 2004 saw more and then 2021 to current has seen larger amounts compared to the past year. Students were able to see the difference between earthquakes and explosions from mining operations.

While it is hard to see the action of cells in a classroom, the evidence of the cell working can be seen. Today, Biology students looked at the increase of exhaling of Carbon dioxide from rest to exercise through changing the pH of water. This is a lab that Mrs. Bushman write for ASU and can be found on ASU's ASAP website.

Recently the Chemistry class created Fruits of Ester. Using different Fruits, they were able to discover true scents of fruits. This is a process by which basic perfumes and flavors are extracted.

The Corpus Callosum is a part of the brain that connects the left hemisphere with the right hemisphere. When learning a task with a dominate hand (that uses the opposite side of the brain) the task can be quickly learned. When trying to do the new task with the less-dominate hand (the less dominate hemisphere of the brain), the task is more difficult at first, but can quickly be done due to the thickness of the tissue.
Horses have a thinner Corpus Callosum, when training a horse, you teach them on one side and then have to re-teach them on the other side. Today, A&P students tested their skills with chop sticks and grains of rice in their dominate hand and then tried it with their less dominate hand. Practice makes perfect!
And yes, there is a difference between wooden, metal, and Korean style chopsticks.

Nothing better than Chemistry classes that have achieved full lab independence so early in the school year; you can give them 2 labs and have them do the labs successfully. Today, we did 2 labs, both Le Chatelier's Principle - Hot/Cold & pH. Le Chatelier's Principle shows a system will shift, establish a new equilibrium and go back and forth.
Congratulations to our Junior High wrestlers as they competed in the White Mountain League Finals this past weekend. Teagan Miller took 1st place in the 93 lb weight class. Koen Frost, Grayson King, Sebastian Serna, and Zaiden Williams each finished top 4 in their respective weight classes. Great season team!

While working with an actual human brain would be fun, we can only work with a sheep brain. A&P was identifying different parts of the sheep brain, which is very similar to the human brain. It is harder to identify parts of the brain when it is not color coded like in diagrams.

Gummy Bear Osmosis is always a favorite - while solution percentage shrinks the gummy bear, which on will make it more fat?

When colors change (and you don't expect them too) it is one of the most fun chemistry labs. Blue Bottle, which is an oxidation reduction lab, it is always fun to see how many times you can get the cycle of blue to clear.
